WELCOME to the NSCA Website! Welcome to the web site of North Staffs Carers Association.
The Association's origins date back to a 1983 research project initiated by the North Staffs Family Care - Lichfield Diocesan Society.
This project explored the experiences of Carers and led to the publication of a hand- book 'Day After Day' - A guide for those caring for an elderly relative. In tandem with the appearance of this publication, the first Carers' Support Group was established in Newcastle under Lyme.
In 1985, a Carers' Support Committee was established to look at the best ways of supporting Carers across North Staffordshire. In 1987, funding was secured to appoint a Development Worker whose role was to set up Support Groups for Carers - mainly Carers of older people. The Association was then called "North Staffs Association of Carers' Support Groups"
In 1995, the Association extended its services to provide information, representational services, emotional support, and training. At this time, the Association changed its name to North Staffs Carers Association.
North Staffs Carers Association has grown appreciably over the last few years, supporting even more Carers, with a wider range of services. The majority of that growth has been derived from a greater focus on Carers, from the Social Care and Health Authorities, along with increased external funding from The Big Lottery and other grant making trusts. We are realistic in our financial expectations. If we want to continue to develop Carer services and support, we have to generate more income from outside of the statutory bodies.
We have ambitious plans to develop the services we provide over the next few years. However, it was clear that with our present structure they were unlikely to be realised. The Board of Directors approved the Business Plans in November 2005, which will provide management stability, reduce our financial risks and more importantly, give the Association the opportunity to develop and grow.
Our ultimate aim is to provide a range of support services to Carers, that becomes the benchmark for other Carers' associations to strive for.
In January 2006 there was a significant change in our management structure. John Connor, our Chief Officer for the last three years, relinquished his Chief Officer role to concentrate wholly on the strategic development and growth of the Association. John has developed the business to where it is today and is very excited at the challenge of taking it to the next stage.
Jane Harding, who has worked closely with John over the last three years, has been promoted to Chief Officer. Jane has worked tirelessly to improve the services to Carers and knows the Association inside out. Jane will be able to concentrate fully on working with Carers, to understand their issues and concerns, and ensuring that our services match Carers' expectations.
The Board of Directors, along with the Management Team, are really excited about the changes and are looking forward to providing an even better service to Carers in North Staffordshire.
