Are You a Carer?
A Carer is someone who, without payment, cares for someone else, who because of illness, disability, or infirmity, cannot manage without help.
The person being cared for may be a partner, spouse, child, other relative, neighbour or friend.
Carers can be any age or gender. They can be found in all communities.
A Carers' lifestyle can be restricted and Carers can become mentally and physically exhausted, because of their caring role.
Many people do not identify themselves as Carers and do not seek necessary help and support.
If you are a Carer, you may think you are alone, that no-one notices you, or that what you do doesn't really have much impact. You are wrong! Look at the following facts and figures, to see how important you are (not only to the person you are caring for).
Carers in Britain
There are around 6 million adult Carers in Britain
Carers provide the bulk of "Care in the Community"
The care that they provide saves the country £87 billion every year. This equates to:
- £1.67 billion per week
- £238 million per day
- £9.93 million per hour
- £166,000 per minute
- £15,260 per year for every carer in the UK
Carers in North Staffordshire
The population of North Staffordshire is 490,000
It is estimated that 1 in 8 people is a Carer.
This means that there could be as many as 61,250 Carers in North Staffordshire.
This would mean that Carers in North Staffordshire save the county £934 million each year.
Young Carers
There are over 51,000 known Young Carers, under the age of 18, in the UK. This may be under representing the situation, because it does not take into account the number of unknown children with caring responsibilities.
Parent Carers
Parent Carers are parents who are looking after a child who has an illness, or a disability. Very often they do not recognise themselves as Carers, thinking of themselves only as parents.
North Staffs Carers Association has a Support Worker who can offer Parent Carers the extra information and support they may need. If you are a Parent Carer, contact us on 01782 834836 to see how we can help."
New Carers
If you have recently become a Carer and would like some information about the support available to you, or if you are likely to become a Carer in the near future and would like to discuss the implications - please contact North Staffs Carers Association either by calling 01782 834836, or by using the facility on the Contact Us page.
Carers In Waiting
It can be very difficult for parents when a new baby has health problems, especially when those problems are present from birth and are likely to be long term. In this case, not only do the parents become "parents" they also become "Carers".
Sometimes potential health problems can be diagnosed before birth. It may be of some help to the new parents to know that extra support is on hand from the very beginning. North Staffs Carers can offer support even before the baby is born.
If you are expecting a child that may have an illness, or a disability, and you feel that you would like some advice or help, contact our support team on 01782 834836 or by using the facility on the Contact Us page.
