Carers and Employment
Over the next 8 years, an extra 2.5 million people will be needed in the workforce. There will be a shortfall in the labour market and Carers can fill this gap. Most Carers are aged 45-64 and have a vast range of skills and experience.
Having a job outside the home is important to Carers, because it gives them some independence, financial security, a break form caring and a chance to be themselves.
However, juggling work and caring can make Carers feel tired and stressed. They sometimes feel guilty about going out to work and leaving the person they are caring for. As a result of this many Carers feel they have no option but to give up work, or they may hesitate to ever seek employment.
North Staffs Carers Association has produced 2 booklets to help Carers who are struggling to get back into the labour market or who are struggling to combine paid work and caring.
"CARERS AND EMPLOYMENT - INFORMATION FOR CARERS" provides advice for Carers on combining work and caring, alternatives to giving up work and how employers can support working Carers.
"CARERS AND EMPLOYMENT - TIPS ON WRITING A CV AND INTERVIEW TECHNIQUES" shows Carers how to use the skills learned as a Carer to compile a CV. It also contains a short "quiz" to enable Carers to decide what kind of job they are best suited to and tips on how to impress at interview.
We have also produced a booklet for employers.
"CARERS AND EMPLOYMENT - INFORMATION FOR EMPLOYERS" stresses the benefits of employing Carers and suggests ways of supporting them in the work place.
